2. Read, read, read! Reading is a wonderful way to expand your vocabulary and help you develop fluency. Always look for material slightly below your present level of English. Children's books are great. You can also look for graded readers. These are special books that are written for specific levels of English.
Penguin Readers by Pearson Education are among the best of the best in graded readers. See what you can find on their website:
www.penguinreaders.com. When you come across a word you do not know, try looking around at the context (the words and phrases around the word you do not know) and see if you can understand the meaning that way. If not, simply underline it and continue reading until you get to the end of the chapter. Then go back with your dictionary and start working to find the meanings of the words you did not know. Work on one chapter at a time and do not move forward until you know what each new word means. (Take it to the next level and try using the new words you learned as much as possible each day.)
SSS方式では辞書は引かないということが推奨されています。しかしそれでは本当に語彙が増えるのか不安な方も(私を含めて)いらっしゃると思います。このメルマガではわからない単語は文脈から類推して、とりあえず章の終わりまで読み進み、わからない単語は章ごとに引いてよい、というありがたい教えです。その後でその単語を使ってみるようにとのことです。
