ビジ英 Focus on Wellness (5) 10/26-27, 2005 最近仕事で読んでいる英文の中に、expectやanticipate
が出てくるとうれしく思います。

それぞれ、
　expect 　　　当然そうなる
　anticipate 　事前に察知して何か対策する
という意味で考えると、その文章がより良く理解できるから
不思議です。

このexpectの問題は、日本人がよく間違う典型のようで、
「翻訳さんぽみち」というメルマガでも取り上げられていました。


また、こちらのページでは
She is expecting a baby. が取り上げられています。
これを「彼女は赤ちゃんを期待している」と訳すと
おかしなことになるというわけです。

＜考察＞
get supportでもいいと思います。
commence = begin

andですが、LEXIS英和では、[結果、理由]の意味と
あります。soと同じ。
Our car broke down, and(so) we had to find a telephone.


（２）このミキサーの全国的売上は、過去５年間
安定している。(nationwide)

＜本多試訳＞
The nationwide sales of this mixer is stable
over the last five years.

＜正解＞
Nationwide sales for this mixer have been stable
for the past five years.

＜考察＞
ここは５年前から現在まで続いているので現在完了ですね。

完了形なら普通、期間はforですが。
forとoverはどちらでいいような気がします。


（３）スピーチはうんざりするものだったが、従業員の
大半は静かに座って興味があるようなふりをしていた。(boring)

The speech was boring but most of employees sat
silently and behaved as if they were interested in it.

＜正解＞
The speech was boring, but most of the employees sat
quietly and pretended to be interested.

＜考察＞
silent、quiet、同じようなものでしょう。
pretend to do で「何々のふりをする」
